Routine Service of Fire Hose Reels
This Restricted Class allows you to undertake the following
work:
- Six monthly and annual routine servicing of fire hose reels in
accordance with AS 1851; and
- Repair of the fire hose reel components downstream of the hose
reel spigot union/isolation valve
It does not allow you to undertake the following:
- Replacement or relocation of an entire fire hose reel
- The service of any interfaced equipment
- Any other fire protection work including construction,
installation, replacement, repair, maintenance, testing and
commissioning work
Pathways to meet application requirements
FPA Australia offers two pathways to individuals depending on
their level of experience. Select the pathway most
appropriate to your specific circumstances.

Training Pathway
The Training pathway requires participants to complete
training in routine service of fire hose reels through a workplace
based training delivery model including "on the job" training. The
course is only suitable for individuals employed in the fire
protection industry who have access to a supervisor /
mentor.
After completing the required training and gaining the necessary
experience, participants are required to attend a scheduled
assessment session or complete a remote assessment.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, remote assessment for this class
is preferred.

Assessment Only Pathway
The Assessment Only pathway is for individuals who have
been undertaking the work covered by this class for an extended
period of time and who are capable of passing the required
assessments without undertaking any formal training.
Participants who enrol in the Assessment Only pathway will
be provided with training resource materials to help refresh their
knowledge. When ready for assessment, participants attend a
scheduled assessment session or complete a remote
assessment.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, remote assessment for this
restricted class is preferred.

Supporting Units of Competency
All four fire protection restricted classes require applicants
to complete three "supporting" units of competency that are common
to all classes. These units of competency are only required
to be completed once, regardless of the number of restricted
classes that an individual applies for.
The supporting units consist of:
- CPPCMN2002A - Participate in workplace safety arrangements
- CPPFES2004A - Identify types of installed fire safety equipment
and systems
- CPPFES2006A - Prepare for installation and servicing
operations
These units form part of the FPAS Accreditation Scheme as well
as being core units in the Certificate II and Certificate III in
Fire Protection Inspection and Testing qualifications.
Applicants are encouraged to check if they have completed any
supporting units prior to enrolment.
Completion of the supporting units of competency is undertaken
through a workplace based training delivery model.
Applicants who require the supporting units can enrol at the
same time as enrolling in the applicable pathway for each selected
fire protection restricted class. A separate enrolment
fee is payable (see below).
Recognition of previous training
Whilst the VBA stipulates units of competency from current
national training packages, many individuals hold units of
competency and/or qualifications from superseded
qualifications.
Individuals with superseded qualifications, sufficient
experience and current ability in a unit of competency can bypass
the learning and go directly to the assessment by undertaking a
process known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
A pre-determined RPL process is available for the "supporting"
units. Further information can be obtained by downloading the
RPL Guide for VBA Supporting Units by clicking the button
below.

Training and Assessment Calendar
Training Pathway
Participants who select this pathway are able to enrol at any
time as the training is conducted in the workplace. When an
applicant is ready to be assessed they are required to register to
attend an assessment session (see below).
Assessment Only Pathway and Assessment
Sessions
Due to Covid-19 the preferred mode of assessment for this class
is to undertake remote assessment. This is applicable for
participants who select either the Training pathway or the
Assessment Only pathway.
Further details on how to undertake practical assessment can be
found here.
If you are unable to undertake a remote assessment, please
contact FPA Australia to make alternative arrangements.
