Routine Service of Water Based Fire Protection Systems Course

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

  

This course is for anyone currently working in the fire protection industry who wants to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Conduct monthly, six monthly and yearly routine service in accordance with AS 1851-2012 on unassisted fire hydrant systems.
  • Conduct monthly and six-monthly routine service in accordance with AS 1851-2012 on assisted hydrant systems that include pumpsets and water storage tanks.

  

WHAT DOES THE COURSE COVER?

  

The course covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake the routine service activities listed below in accordance with AS 1851-2012:

 

  1. Unassisted fire hydrant systems (no pumps and tanks)
    1. Monthly, six-monthly & yearly service
    2. Water supply proving tests using portable flow measuring devices
  2. Assisted fire hydrant systems (pumps and tanks included)
    1. Monthly and six-monthly service
  3. Fire hydrant and fire hose reel system pumpsets
    1. Monthly and six-monthly service of fire pumpsets
    2. Monthly and six-monthly service of fire hose reel pumpsets
  4. Water storage tanks for fire hydrant systems
    1. Monthly, six-monthly and yearly service

 

Specifically, the course will cover:

 

  • Single and multiple zone hydrant systems
  • Reduced and full capacity tank water storage tanks
  • Automatic tank infill assemblies
  • Water supply and booster assemblies
  • Electric and diesel pumpsets including controllers and jockey pumps
  • Pressure reducing valve stations
  • Fire hydrant spacing, location and signage requirements
  • Hydrant system block plans and baseline data
  • AS1851 Sections 1, 3 and 4
  • Flow testing fire hydrants using portable flow testing equipment 

 

  WHAT IS REQUIRED BEFORE ENROLLING IN THIS COURSE?

  

  • Participants must currently be working in the fire protection industry.
  • The applicant must be employed by a business who has access to a range of fire hydrant systems including:
    • Ten sites that have an unassisted fire hydrant system; and
    • Five sites that have an assisted fire hydrant system (pumps and tanks).

 

 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DATES?

 

Classroom based learning - 16 & 17 July 2019 ‐ Randwick TAFE NSW

  • 2 days face to face training.

 

Workplace based learning - 18 July 2019 to 30 September 2019

  • Conduct 6 monthly routine service on 10 hydrant systems at 5 different sites.
  • A copy of the logbook sheet for each test to be provided, signed by the applicant and their designated supervisor.
  • Conduct 5 hydrant system inspections at 5 different unassisted sites as specified in the above face‐to‐face course and provide an inspection report for each site.

 

Classroom based learning - 1 to 3 October - Randwick TAFE NSW.

  • 3 days face to face training.

 

Workplace based learning - 4 October to 31 October 2019

  • Conduct monthly routine service on 5 assisted (pumped) hydrant systems at 5 different Sites.
  • A copy of the logbook sheet for each test to be provided, signed by the applicant and their designated supervisor.
  • Conduct 5 pumpset identification check lists, as specified in the above face‐to‐face course.

 

Classroom based Exam - 1 November 2019 - Randwick TAFE NSW.

  • Attend for a 1.5 hour theory examination and a 1 hour practical examination.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

1. All onsite tests must be conducted under direct supervision (in person also on site) by a technician holding this level of restricted licence or greater or an individual deemed suitable by FPA Australia (credentials to be supplied on the Enrolment Form).

2. All supplied logbook sheets for the onsite learning must be signed by the applicant and the applicant's mentor / supervisor.

Please Note:  To obtain FPAS Accreditation or Licencing in South Australia, completion of additional units of competency are required. These units are detailed below and a 50% discount off the standard enrolment fees will apply to any student who enrols in this course and the units listed below, at the same time.
