Slight increase in September quarter wages

Both trend and seasonally adjusted Wage Price Indices (WPI) increased by the same amount on both a quarterly basis (0.5%) and on an annual basis (2.0%), as indicated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) release of WPI data on 15 November 2017 for September 2017. According to the ABS, the seasonally adjusted WPI has recorded quarterly wages growth in the range of 0.4% to 0.6% for the last 13 quarters.

 

The September quarter results were similar to the June quarter, when the all sectors indicator WPI, both the seasonally and trend adjusted, rose by 0.5%, with an annual increase of 1.9%. The September data shows a quarterly increase (June to September) of 0.5% and an annual increase (September 2016 to September 2017) of 2.0%.

 

The private sector quarterly wages (excluding bonuses) grew by 0.5% (1.9% annual, by the seasonally adjusted indicator) - the same for the trend indicator: 0.5% and 1.9%.

In the private sector the mining sector position was reversed, with accommodation and food services recording the highest quarterly rise (1.7%) while the mining sector recorded the lowest for the quarter (0.2%).

 

The highest quarterly rise in the private sector across the states/territories was experienced in Tasmania (1.5%) while the lowest being experienced in the NT with 0.6%.

 

The annual wage growth across the states/territories with weakest in the WA and Tasmania (1.3% and 1.4%) with the strongest growth in Victoria, QLD and Tasmania (2.2%) as set out below.
