NSW outlines construction reforms vision

Posted on : Friday, 28 June 2019

Earlier this week the NSW Government released a discussion paper outlining its vision for construction industry reforms needed to implement the recommendations of the Shergold-Weir report.

The Building Stronger Foundations paper is now seeking industry feedback on the proposed reforms, which include:

  • Requiring categories of building practitioners who are registered as 'building designers' to declare plans and performance solutions are compliant with the Building Code of Australia, and that builders declare that they are built according to these declared plans;
  • Introducing a new registration scheme for 'building designers';
  • Ensuring an industry-wide duty of care is owed to subsequent home owners; and
  • Appointing a Building Commissioner to act as the consolidated regulator for building in NSW.

The consultation period is open until Wednesday, 24 July 2019. FPA Australia is currently developing a response, and welcomes input from members sent to technical@fpaa.com.au.
