Victorian construction industry shut down for two weeks

Posted on : Thursday, 23 September 2021

On Monday, the Victorian Government announced an immediate shut down of the construction sector for two weeks from 11.59pm, Monday 20 September in:

  • metropolitan Melbourne;
  • City of Ballarat (until 11:59pm on 22 September);
  • City of Greater Geelong;
  • Surf Coast Shire; and
  • Mitchell Shire.

Only workers who need to attend a site to respond to an emergency or to perform urgent and essential work to protect health and safety.

The shutdown has been implemented due to continued concern about case numbers, transmission risk, and reduced compliance.

The Andrews Government says it will reduce movement, minimise transmission, and allow for the entire industry to adapt appropriately to the Chief Health Officer's Directions, such as getting vaccinated.

All sites will be required to demonstrate compliance with Chief Health Officer Directions prior to reopening, which includes all workers having had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine before they return to site on 5 October.

From 11.59pm 23 September, all construction workers must have had least one dose, or be able to produce evidence of a booking prior to 2 October for a first dose, of the COVID-19 vaccine.

A COVID-19 disaster payment is available to help workers unable to earn income due to public health orders, with more info available at:  COVID-19 Disaster Payment - Services Australia.

This restriction only applies to construction work- according to the Government's authorised worker list, essential services that are required to maintain or protect human health, safety and wellbeing (whether provided by a public or private undertaking) are still allowed.

However, we believe that the reference to 'construction' in that exemption will not apply to work on construction sites, as these have been ordered closed.

Details about the Government's rules can be found here.  For more information, contact the Victorian Government's dedicated COVID-19 hotline on 1800 675 398.
