After shepherding NSW through the worst bushfire season in generations, Rural Fire Service (RFS) Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has announced he will step down from his role, moving to a new position with Resilience NSW.

Commissioner Fitzsimmons' tireless leadership during the 2019-20 bushfire season rightly earned him accolades from all parts of the Australian fire sector and community.

After 35 years of service with the RFS, he will now move to a new role as Commissioner of the new NSW government disaster agency, Resilience NSW.

Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) thanks him for his immense contribution to fire safety over his decades of service, and wishes him well in his new role.

"Shane's passion for enhancing and developing the skills and knowledge of all stakeholders who work in the bushfire protection industry, including his support for accredited consultants, has led to better protected and more resilient communities in NSW," said Chris Wyborn, FPA Australia's General Manager Training, Accreditation and Bushfire Services.

"His legacy will continue to help communities protect themselves from bushfires for many years to come."
