Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) wishes to express its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr Laurie Hammond, Chairman of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, who died over the weekend.

Dr Hammond, who passed away after a short illness, was a major contributor to the direction of life-saving Australian research into bushfire and other natural disasters.

In 2013 he was appointed independent Chairman of the CRC, which coordinates the research efforts of all Australian and New Zealand fire and emergency service authorities, land management agencies and others. In the past five years, he played a key role in the CRC's growth and achievements.

"Laurie's loss will be felt in every corner of the broader emergency services, land management, research and fire protection industry, and his contributions to the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC's work leave a legacy that will protect Australians for decades to come," said FPA Australia CEO Scott Williams.
