Fire Protection Association Australia extends its sympathies to the friends and families of those tragically killed in the wildfires east of Athens in Greece in recent days. The fires have claimed at least 74 lives and injured 187, with the toll expected to climb.

The wildfires are the worst to have hit Greece since 2007.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declared a state of emergency and announced three days of national mourning.

Australian fire and emergency services have reportedly contacted federal authorities about providing assistance.
