Consumer Price Index December Quarter

The latest Consumer Price Index data (December Quarter 2016) for
the All Groups CPI:
- Rose
0.5% in the December Quarter - compared with a rise of 0.7% in the
Sept. Quarter;
- Rose
1.5% through the last 12 months, compared with a rise of 1.3%
through the year to the September Quarter 2016.
OVERVIEW OF CPI MOVEMENTS
- The most significant price rises in the December
Quarter, were for tobacco (+7.4%) (due mainly to the effects of the
federal excise tax increase effective 1.09.16), automotive fuel
(+6.7%), domestic holiday travel and accommodation (+5.5%),
- The most significant offsetting price falls in the December
Quarter were international holiday travel (-2.6%), accessories
(-5.1%) and waters, soft drinks and juices (-3.2%).
- The food and non-alcoholic beverages group retained the most
significant positive contributor to the All groups quarterly
movement with rises in all eight capital cities (+2.8%), followed
by the transport group (+1.7%).
- Over the last 12 months to December quarter 2016, the All
Groups CPI had risen in all capital cities except Darwin with
Sydney and Canberra (+1.8%) with the largest positive movement.
Darwin was -0.4%.
