Fire Protection Industry Awards

The Fire Protection Industry's inaugural awards have been welcomed as an important step in recognising  professionalism within the industry.


The Awards were presented at a Gala event in Sydney on 3 November attended by many of the industry's leading figures.


"Most industries celebrate their best of the best to recognise excellence. The Fire Protection Industry now has its own annual awards which will inspire industry members to excel," said Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) CEO Scott Williams.


"Our winners tonight have shown a standard of professionalism and commitment above and beyond the norm. To have been judged by their peers and recognised in front of their colleagues and friends is an honour they will never forget," said Mr Williams.


The winners of the awards were:


Harry Marryatt Company of the Year Award


Named in honour of the founder of FPA Australia, the award recognises companies that have shown outstanding commitment to the Fire Protection Industry based on staff training, technical advancement, community safety, ongoing professionalism, emerging best practice and innovation.


Harry Marryatt Company of the Year Award 1-49 employees - awarded to Bushfire Prone Planning  


The rise to success of Bushfire Prone Planning (BPP) under Mike Scott and Kathy Nastov is a testimony to the growing awareness of the need to plan for bushfires. Started just three years ago, Mike and Kathy have already built their business to a staff of 16 including bushfire practitioners, GIS consultants and regional staff to meet the needs of regional Western Australians.


All their bushfire practitioners have completed their BPAD training to a minimum of Level 1-BAL Assessor and BPP has an organizational commitment to professional advancement and accreditation.


Harry Marryatt Company of the Year Award 50+ employees - awarded to ARUP


ARUP is a multi-national leader in fire safety with more than 50 fire safety engineers working in its Australian offices as well as fire services or systems engineers, designers of smoke control and fire resistant structures and a team of risk engineers.


ARUP's commitment to professionalism in the industry is demonstrated by its in-house Arup University which assures ongoing access to online professional education and development.


Barry Lee Technical Excellence Award


Celebrates another Association founding father, Barry Lee, OAM. It is presented for outstanding individual technical contribution to the fire industry.


Barry Lee Technical Excellence Award - awarded to Andre Mierzwa of FM Global.


Andre began working in the industry as a Loss Prevention Engineer (Fire) with FM Global in 1975. His work since then has taken him around the world including Europe, Asia and the USA. Andre demonstrated his technical excellence in many areas most recently his work on AS2118.1-2016.


Over the years he has established himself as a leading professional in the industry making him a popular winner of the Barry Lee Technical Excellence Award.


Young Achiever Award


For the most outstanding young leader in the industry - awarded to Daniel Rhodes. Daniel has overcome great personal challenges and become a highly valued member of Territory Fire Service and Training.


Just a few years ago Daniel barely survived being struck by a car as he pushed another person out of traffic and in to safety. His heroic effort there sadly resulted in an acquired brain injury. It was many months before he could leave the hospital. Determined to make a full recovery Daniel was given a chance in the fire protection industry eventually going to work for Territory Fire Service and Training. He faced the challenges his injuries posed to his ability to concentrate and learn to become a highly valued and inspirational member of the team. His determination and commitment were considered exemplary attributes that made him a worthy winner of the Young Achiever Award


A.V. Viscogliosi Outstanding Service Award


Judged by FPA Australia Board of Directors for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry - awarded to David Isaac for his more than 40 years contribution to the industry.


David Isaac has an incredibly impressive C.V. His 46 years of experience in the fire protection industry is comprehensive. Not only is David the business Principal and Director of Fire and Safety Technologies Pty. Ltd, a Consulting Associate with Cee3 Pty. Ltd, he is a member of the Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) Technical Advisory Committee TAC/2, a former FPA Australia representative to Australian Communications Industry Forum Cabling Advisory Group and he has been an active participant in Fire Industry Associations and the Standards writing processes in Australia.


Recognition of his contribution with the A.V. Viscogliosi Outstanding Service Award is a tribute to his many years in the industry.


Meritorious Service Award

The Meritorious Service Award is given to industry members who have made a significant contribution to the Association that requires special acknowledgement.


Meritorious Service Awards were presented to Grahame Douglas and Simon Hill. 


Grahame Douglas

Grahame's extensive history understanding bushfires and the risks they pose to life, property and the environment, goes back to the 1980s.

His passion to advance our understanding of bushfires and what can be done to mitigate their effects has continued ever since.


He has been a long term member of NSW Rural Fire Service and represented FPA Australia on AS3959 Construction in Bushfire Prone Areas as well as providing great support to Association technical staff.


For the last three years Grahame has lectured Post Graduates in Bushfire Protection program while also taking his PhD in NSW bushfire weather and fire behavior under the influence of climate change.


Simon Hill

Simon Hill also has more than four decades of experience behind him working at organisations both here and overseas.


His commitment to the fire protection and fire safety community is well reflected in the long list of associations with which he has been affiliated.


They include National Council President of the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating, and service on many Standards Australia Fire Prevention Committees.


Platinum Members


FPA Australia also celebrated the contribution made by its Platinum members in 2016/2017 in  - Brooks Australia, Chubb Fire & Security, FlameStop Australia, Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers, Kidde, Wormald and Tyco Fire Protection Products.


"Without their ongoing support and the many entries from the industry we could not have made the Awards night the success it was. We are now looking forward to our second Awards night in 2017 which will be held in Melbourne," said Mr Williams.
