Passive fire protection specialist

A position for a full time Fire Protection Specialist (Passive Fire Protection) reporting to the General Manager - Education and Bushfire Services is now available. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience and expertise in passive fire and smoke protection systems and be passionate about advancing skills and knowledge in the fire protection industry.

The purpose of this role is to expand the Association's training and education services through the development and delivery of a suite of educational products and services related to passive fire protection systems and equipment. These products and services include but are not limited to;


  • Training related to design, installation, commissioning, certification and maintenance
  • Technical seminars & workshops
  • Technical guidance documents and best practice guides; and
  • Provision of general technical advice to members.


Responsibilities include


  • Training: Develop, deliver and evaluate training that meets industry requirements and is consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework and the National VET Regulator. Training includes nationally recognised qualifications, short courses, workshops and professional development sessions aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals working in the fire protection industry.
  • Assessment: Undertake and evaluate assessments in line with the requirements of the Training Package, principles of assessment and the rules of evidence.
  • Customer Service: Respond to customer queries and provide training and assessment information and specialist training advice to members, non-member clients and industry representatives, including the development of training plans and determination of assessment pathways.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Promote and market our products and services and any licencing / accreditation requirements that might be relevant to participants.
  • Compliance and Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the evaluation and continuous improvement of our RTO policies, training and assessment materials and training products and services.
  • Training Resource Development: Assist with the design and development of training and assessment materials and session plans for various training courses.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Identify, lead and contribute to the development of tools, processes, guidance documents and systems to enhance the professionalism and recognition of individuals and companies involved in the fire protection industry.


To be considered for this role the successful candidate will be versatile and have the ability to time manage their day to meet the requirements of the position. The candidate will also need to demonstrate the following attribute, skills and experience.

Selection criteria


  • Appropriate qualifications or extensive experience in passive fire and smoke system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance are essential. This should include fire and smoke doors and shutters, fire stopping of service penetrations, fire protected structural elements and fire and smoke barriers.
  • Additional qualifications in fire protection including PRM20406 Certificate II in Asset Maintenance (Fire Protection Equipment), CPP20511 Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection & Testing, PRM20406 Certificate III in Asset Maintenance (Fire Protection Equipment) or CPP30811 Cert III in Fire Protection Inspection & Testing are preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise and at least 10 years' experience in the fire protection industry with a specific focus on passive fire protection systems.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills with a proven ability and experience in providing instruction, mentoring and/or training in passive fire protection systems and equipment.
  • A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) or its successor. If the qualification is not held or is not the most recent, then the individual will be required to complete this course within 6 months of commencing employment.
  • Understanding and application of principles of adult learning and assessment.
  • Understanding and implementation of national training package requirements.
  • Ability to develop professional lesson plans, training materials and presentations that include video and animation using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Strong writing skills for developing documentation.
